AC Maintenance

AC MaintenanceWith the summer days getting hotter and hotter as the days go by, the need to put the air conditioner in your home grows. You'll need to take proper care of the AC unit to ensure it keeps your house cool, and not just run while raising your electricity bill. Proper AC maintenance will give the unit a great life span, and make your house nice and cool on those hot summer days.

Freon, in commercial home AC units is not an issue, so you would not need to recharge it, however, freon leaks can become an issue, and can be easily fixed by opening the unit and using a simple stop leak compound at the site of the leak. This will save the AC unit from icing over the coils, and eventually can cause the unit to overheat and fail.

Most AC units will have filters than need to be cleaned or changed regularly, and the units will usually have an indicator light on the front telling you to check the filter. When you remove the front cover of the unit, you can see how dirty your filter is. Cleaning it is an easy job, all you need is some soap and warm water. You can run the AC for a little while with the filter out drying, but it's not recommended for long use without a filter if the filter has to be replaced.

Checking the thermostat is working properly is also imperative to ensure the unit is working and cooling properly. This is also an easy job to take care of, as it could just be the need for a simple battery replacement, if the thermostat is battery powered. If the thermostat isn't battery powered, you will need to contact an electrician to do the job unless you are one yourself.

Other routine maintenance is to ensure all compartments are in place, there is nothing obstructing airflow of the unit, and cleaning of loose dirt and debris from the unit to ensure the filter lasts longer.
