Common Causes of a Toilet Not Flushing Properly

The most common toilet problem for many homes is, obviously, an improper toilet flush. The most obvious cause for this problem is blockage, but that is not always the cause.

Before you decide to call a plumber to fix your toilet issues, you should definitely check out these common causes of improper flushes.

Indianapolis Toilet-Repair-ServicesClogging of the Toilet

A lot of things can clog your toilet pipe. If you attempt to flush something other than toilet paper, the pipe will most likely get clogged. One of the things that people often try to flush down the toilet is sanitary napkins. To unblock the pipe, a toilet plunger or auger is used to push down the waste.

Calcium build-up can also lead to blockage. For minerals to cause a blockage, they must have accumulated for a number of years. A plunger or toilet snake will not solve the problem. Use of calcium, lime and rust (CLR) is recommended.

Lift Chain Problems

The lift chain connects the flapper to the flushing handle. If the chain is loose, turning the handle will not be enough to raise the flapper, and the toilet won’t flush as a result. Adjusting the length of the chain to ensure that the flapper is raised will solve this problem.

Bent or Warped Flapper

The flapper allows water to pass when you flush, and seals the hole to allow enough water to accumulate in the tank. If the flapper is old, bent or warped, it might need to be replaced. Drain the tank before replacing the flapper, and then flush to check whether the problem has being solved.

Low Water Level in the Toilet Tank

If the water level is too low, the toilet won’t flush. If this is the case, then there may be a problem with the water valve. In most cases the valve may have been turned off accidentally.

Some of the problems mentioned above can actually be solved without the need of calling for professional help. If the problem still persists, however, you may have to contact a professional plumber to help you out.
