What is hard water?

Hard water is a common occurrence wherein the rainwater that is absorbed through the ground picks up an immense amount of minerals. As it travels into our drinking water, those naturally occurring minerals dissolve and become part of our potable water supply. Even though hard water doesn’t cause any health concerns, the two most common minerals– calcium and magnesium, can prevent cleaning products effectiveness. If unchecked, hard water can lead to a host of issues much more serious than lifeless hair.

What does hard water affect?

  • Prevents Proper Lathering. Lathering cleaning agents will react with the excess minerals in the water and leave a nasty soap coating on everything, instead of producing the cleansing lather that they are supposed to. The coating is usually called soap scum.

  • Lengthen Heating Time. Those same excess minerals will slow the heating time of water. This means that water heaters will have to work harder to get the water to the proper temperature. This also means that facets have to run longer which translates into a higher water bill. No one wants higher bills, right?

  • Overworked Appliances. If the minerals cause the water heater to work harder, then it should be obvious what it is doing to your other appliances that use water. The appliance struggle to do their jobs and that constant struggle shortens their useful lives.

  • Damaged Plumbing and Pipes. The most expensive issue that arises from unchecked hard water is pipe clogging. Eventually the minerals can solidify and clog your pipes. This translates into needlessly expensive repair and replacement costs that a water softener could have prevented the issue.

There are many other problems that hard water can cause, but you get the point– a water softener now can help prevent them later. No one wants to deal with huge bills later that they know could have been prevented!
