Air conditioning systems are comprised of three major parts which are the air compressor, the condenser and the evaporator. In central systems that are split, the compressor and condenser are contained in an outdoor housing unit while the indoor portion, the evaporator, is located indoors and is usually combined with the furnace. In the air conditioning cycle, the refrigerant first enters into the compressor as a warm low pressure gas. After it has been compressed, or has had its molecules squeezed together, it leaves the compressor as a high pressure hot gas.

The condenser receives the hot high pressure gas and is cooled by air that is blown by a condenser fan that pushes the air over finned condenser coils. This process causes the gas to be changed into a high pressure hot liquid which is then pushed onto the expansion valve.

The expansion valve receives the high pressure hot liquid into its small entrance and then releases it as a cooled vapor through an opening on the other side and into the evaporator coil.

The evaporator coil is met by warm air blown in from the home that subsequently heats it while the cold coil transfers the cooled air back into the home. As the refrigerant becomes heated again, it re-enters the cycle.

There are two main systems for air conditioning:

  • Central air conditioning systems are comprised of two units, the condensing unit and the evaporating unit. They are controlled by a thermostat located in the home and are usually piggy-backed onto a furnace.

  • Heat pumps are a combination heating and air conditioning system. They work by reversing a process that provides heat in the winter and cooled air during the summer according to thermostat control settings.
